Copenhagen as a jazz city
Copenhagen is one of the jazz capitals of Europe. This has been the case since Sam Wooding's Chocolade Kiddies in 1925 brought original New Orleans Jazz to the city. During the thirties Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter stayed in Copenhagen for extended periods of time. Louis Armstrong visited Copenhagen for the first time in 1933 and was greeted by 3.000 enthusiastic fans when he arrivedby train at Copenhagen Central Station. During the forties Danish jazz was part of the reaction against the German occupation. During the fifties the leading jazz bands began to play yearly concerts in Copenhagen. Many American expatriates lived here during the sixties and the seventies: Stan Getz, Oscar Pettiford, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Kenny Drew, Thad Jones. Several americans still live here and perform: Horace Parlan, Duke Jordan, Ed Thigpen, Doug Raney and Bob Rockwell. A vast number of young Danish talents have been active on the jazz scene for the last 20 years. Especially after the foundation of the Rythmic Conservatory in 1986.

The jazz clubs
There are many jazz venues in Copenhagen. The most famous is probably Copenhagen Jazzhouse. But there are many other presenting all styles of jazz: dixieland, big band, mainstream, avantgarde, blues. The situation for the venues are under constant change, which makes it difficult to know on a given day who plays where and at what time. This is where Copenhagen Jazz Guides get into the picture.

Copenhagen Jazz Guides
Copenhagen Jazz Guides was founded on the 18th of March 1995 by Erik Moseholm, the former head of The Rythmic Music Conservatory . Seven educated jazzguides have the task of making a jazz tour enjoyable for all guests no matter what level of interest in jazz the participants have. The guides have a thorough knowledge of the music, the town, the clubs and the musicians. They are all enthusiastic jazz fans.

What is a guided jazztour?
